Kilauea was created around 300,00 to 600,000 years ago as tectonic plates shifted over the Hawaiian hotspot in the earth's underlying mantle, and it continues daily to lay down some of the newest land on the planet. The best way to see the magnificent and powerful forces of Pele, goddess of fire, is by helicopter, but much can be learned on guided expeditions too. Kilauea's lava is not currently flowing into the ocean but witnessing the dramatic effects of the eruption early this year could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
